Teaching Word Families with Mini-Books

Updated: Jun 2, 2020

I am as proud of my first post as I am of making it through my first day of teaching Kindergarten! Or as proud as I was of my students for stepping off that bus once upon a September and bravely entering their new world.

So, here it is! Finished, polished, and I promise, full of Pizzazz! The "Short Vowel Interactive Word Family Books" Project! Freebie Right Here, Right Now! (Click on the image below). And read on for more!

Teaching the Consonant-Vowel-Consonant (CVC) word families is a great way to teach foundational reading skills to your young readers! Grab a pocket chart, anchor chart, or word wall, and permanently display the CVC Word Families at your Literacy Center. Play games, do hands-on activities, complete worksheets or mini-books at small group Literacy Centers for lots of practice.

We have had so much fun with word family games and various activities! Check out this post from: "Proud to be Primary" for several ideas. The author also includes a weekly word family teaching plan you might be interested in using.

Also, depending on your kiddo's level, interactive Google Slides can be an amazing independent Center. Never used them?...... Don't worry, it's easy....

Although it took my Kindergartners a little bit of time to learn how to independently log in with their usernames/passwords over at the little Classroom Computer Lab (iPads could also be used), it was totally worth it in the end! Check out this other post on creating interactive Google Slides activities for Centers. The possibilities are truly endless!
